Omarkhayam Romato "Omar" Maute (12th June 1980 - 16th October 2017) was an Islamic terrorist and, along with his brother Abdullah Maute, the founder of the terror organization Maute group.
Biography edit
Omarkhayam "Omar" Maute was born in Lanao del Sur in 1980. He and his brother Abdullah studied Islamic theology and Omar was educated in Egypt. He and his six brothers, including Abdullah, were all members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, as was their father. However, after the Front began to seek peace with the Filipino government, Omar, Abdullah and their five brothers all left the group and pledged allegiance to ISIS. They also established connections with the terrorist leader Ameril Umbra Kato and founded a jihadist organization named "Maute Group".
In February 2016, the Filipino government issued a report claiming that Omar was killed at the Battle of Butig, but this was later disproved in May 2017 when footage of him was recorded at the Battle of Marawi. During the continued battle, all seven Maute brothers were reported as killed, but Omar was later confirmed to have survived.
On 16th October 2017, Omar Maute and former Abu Sayyaf leader Isnilon Hapilon were killed by the Filipino army in Marawi. The Filipino government stated the Maute group were "practically wiped out" following the deaths of the Maute Brothers, but warned that younger members of the group could take command.
