{{Villain_Infobox|image =Pope_Innocent_III.jpg }}'''Pope Innocent III'''Ā (Latin:Ā ''Innocentius III''; 1160 or 1161 ā 16 July 1216), bornĀ Ā '''Lotario dei Conti di Segni'''Ā (anglicized as Lothar ofĀ Segni) reigned from 8 January 1198 to his death. Pope Innocent was one of the most powerful and influential of the medieval popes. He exerted a wide influence over the Christian states ofĀ Europe, claiming supremacy over all of Europe's kings. He was central in supporting theĀ Catholic Church's reforms of ecclesiastical affairs through hisĀ decretalsĀ and theĀ Fourth Lateran Council. This resulted in a considerable refinement of WesternĀ canon law. He is furthermore notable for usingĀ interdictĀ and other censures to compel princes to obey his decisions, although these measures were not uniformly successful. Innocent greatly extended the scope of theĀ crusades, directing crusades againstĀ Muslim Spainand theĀ Holy LandĀ as well as theĀ Albigensian CrusadeĀ against theĀ CatharsĀ in southern France. The latter is considered to be a [[genocide]] as the massacres committed against Cathar civilians(at least 200,000 and at most a million were killed) were aimed at destroying the religious community. Raphael Lemkin, the coiner of the word "genocide" described this as "one of the most conclusive cases of genocide in religious history". He organized theĀ Fourth CrusadeĀ of 1202ā1204, which ended in theĀ sack of Constantinople. Although the attack on Constantinople went against his explicit orders, and the Crusaders were subsequently excommunicated, Innocent reluctantly accepted this result, seeing it as the will of God to reunite theĀ LatinĀ andĀ Orthodox Churches. In the event, the sack of Constantinople and the subsequent period ofĀ ''Frankokratia''Ā heightened the hostility between the Latin and Greek churches. (The Byzantine empire was restoredĀ in 1261Ā but never regained its former strength, finally falling in 1453.)
