Ray Teret (24 October 1941 - 5 May 2021) was a British DJ who started his career in the 1960s. In 2012 he was accused of multiple sexual offences against young girls during the 1960s and 1970s. He was convicted of rape and indecent assault in 2014 and sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Biography[edit]

Teret was born in Salisbury in 1941. He met TV personality Jimmy Savile, who would be unmasked as a prolific child molester after his death in 2011, in the early 1960s and the two men began sharing a flat in Salford, with Teret working as Savile's chauffeur and assistant DJ. Teret began working as a DJ at Radio Caroline North in the mid-1960s, under the moniker "Ugli Ray", and went on to work at various other radio stations after leaving in 1966.

On 8 November 2012, Teret was arrested by Greater Manchester Police after three women accused him of raping them when they were children. Further investigation uncovered graffiti behind the wallpaper in Teret's flat containing names and telephone numbers of a number of people. Police followed up on this and discovered that the people referred to in the graffiti were victims of Teret, resulting in 27 additional accusations against him being uncovered. These included 18 rapes committed against victims as young as 12, including one occasion on which he and Jimmy Savile were said to have raped a 15-year-old girl in their flat.

Teret came to trial in October 2014. He and two other men, Alan Ledger and William Harper, were charged with 18 counts of rape and 12 counts of indecent assault. Teret was also charged with assisting Jimmy Savile to rape the 15-year-old, in addition to raping her himself. Teret told the court that he had no interest in underage girls, allowing the prosecution to confront him with a 1999 conviction for statutory rape; he had been jailed for having sex with a 15-year-old.

In December 2014, Teret was found guilty of 18 of the charges against him - seven counts of rape and eleven of indecent assault. He was found not guilty of helping Jimmy Savile to rape the girl, although he was convicted of raping her himself. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison by Justice Jonathan Baker, who told him that he should not be released. Alan Ledger and William Harper were found not guilty of all charges.

Teret died at HM Prison Manchester in May 2021.
