Rigby Middle School Shooter
|
Rigby Middle School Shooter (born in 2008) is the name given to an unnamed female student of Rigby Middle School who on May 6th, 2021, launched a shooting spree at Rigby Middle School. During the shooting she injured two fellow students and a janitor. Due to her age, she has been placed in the custody of the Idaho Department of Juvenile Corrections until her 19th birthday. If she is not judged to be rehabilitated by that time, she will remain in custody until she is 21.[1]
A Summary of the Shooting edit
On the morning of May 6th 2021, a 12-year-old girl dressed mostly in black with a black surgical mask arrived at school at about 8:19 a.m. She then spent the morning wandering the hallways. She was noted by teachers as being anxious. She had stopped into a classroom, left, and just after 9 a.m. briefly went into the counselor’s office and had a seemingly ordinary interaction with staff members.[2][3]
After the student left the office, she headed to the bathrooms on the southeast side of the building. There, she appeared to take her backpack off and removed a semi-automatic pistol.[2]
The student appeared to aim at several students and a staff member. It’s not clear whom the first gunshots were aimed at or if specific people were being targeted. The shooter followed other students who were fleeing. The first person injured in the shooting was janitor Jim Wilson, who was shot in the leg.[2][3]
The next person to be shot was a girl leaving a bathroom very close to the armed student and not far from where the janitor had been hit. The victim didn’t know what the armed student was holding, but when she heard a gunshot, she started running. She turned to see if she was being followed, and the armed student was behind her. The girl was struck in the elbow.[2]
A boy was shot outside the building whilst hiding from the shooter. He was hit in the thigh and hand — possibly by the same bullet.[2]
Teacher Krista Gneiting was actively ushering students to safety when she came across the injured boy and she tended to him.[2] It was here she came across the shooter. When she saw the weapon, she stopped and approached the armed student. Gneiting asked if she could have the gun and successfully disarmed the shooter, pulling her into a hug until law enforcement arrived.[2][3]
In the probable cause affidavit, Detective Jason Pettingill states the backpack "had a pistol, two knives, and a torch."[3]
No one else was involved in the shooting by the shooter's own addition. Police later recovered evidence found in the shooter's room at her house. Among the evidence was a hit list, and plans to kill "at least 20, and wound 40 to 60."[3]
