Ronald Lee Moore (3 May 1967 - 5 January 2008) was an American murderer, rapist and suspected serial killer who murdered at least two women between 1996 and 1999.

Biography edit

Murders edit

Moore's first known victim was Shawn Marie Neal, an escort who lived in North Carolina. On 2 June 1996, Neal had gone to service a man named Don Gibson (later determined to be a false name used by Moore). Her body was found hanging from a building, having been strangled to death. Her murder went unsolved for 24 years.

The second known victim of Moore's was 27-year-old Annelise Hyang Suk Lee, a Korean-American woman who was murdered on 10 December 1999 outside her Maryland apartment. Lee's employer grew concerned when she did not show up for work or answer her phone and she was reported missing to the police. Lee's body was found in her apartment on 13 December 1999 by a maintenance worker. An autopsy determined that she had died of blunt force trauma and strangulation. The murder went unsolved for nearly fourteen years.

Capture edit

In 2000, Moore was arrested for burglary and sentenced to thirteen years in prison. In July 2006 his DNA was matched to a sample taken from an unsolved rape in October 1999. Moore had forced his way into a woman's house, shocked her with a cattle prod and then forced her to have sex with him. Maryland authorities had him transferred to the Anne Arundel County Detention Center to await trial for the rape.

On 21 November 2007, Moore was released due to a bureaucratic error. He became a fugitive and fled to Louisiana. His release attracted national attention and he was profiled on the series America's Most Wanted. He was eventually recaptured on 24 December after being arrested breaking into a house. He was extradited back to Maryland to stand trial.

Death edit

On 2 January 2008, Moore attempted suicide by hanging himself. He was found by a guard and resuscitated by prison nurses. Moore began to breath again and was transferred to a prison hospital; however, he had not recovered from his injuries and was pronounced dead on 5 January. After his death, DNA testing by cold case teams linked him to the murders of Neal and Lee. It is suspected that Moore may have been responsible for more murders.
