| Drain and a group of fellow church members formed an elder board around 2011 which began to handle the affairs of the church. They subsequently turned on Shirley Phelps-Roper, removing her from the spokesperson duties. Sometime around August/September 2013, Drain and the rest of the church excommunicated Fred Phelps for alleged heresy after an incident where Phelps had allegedly called the pro-LGBT house across the street “Good People”. | Sometime in late 2020, Drain, his wife and two youngest children were kicked out of Westboro Baptist Church. It is unknown at this time as to why they were kicked out.
