Before he joined the WBC, he was a filmmaker who wanted to document the church. After listening to one of Fred Phelps' sermons, he converted to the church and moved his family to Kansas. When his daughter, Lauren Drain, started to question the beliefs of the church, Steve was the first to say his own daughter should be kicked out. Once Lauren had left, Steve removed every picture of Lauren and disowned her.

Steve Drain is a member of the infamous Westboro Baptist Church and, as of August 2013, its de facto leader following the removal of Shirley Phelps-Roper from church leadership and the subsequent excommunication and death of her father, pastor Fred Phelps. Ironically, he is one of the very few members of the church not related to the Phelps family by blood.

At some point in August of 2013, Drain and a group of fellow church members turned on the Phelps elders, officially removing Shirley Phelps from leadership of the church and excommunicating her father when he attempted to intervene. He recently confirmed that Fred Phelps is in hospice care following Nathan Phelps facebook post, but he didn't comment on Pastor Phelps' excommunication.

Steve is the official spokesperson of of the Westboro Baptist Church and handles the church's online media.
