At some point in August of 2013, Drain and a group of fellow church members turned on the Phelps elders, officially removing Shirley Phelps from the leadership of the church and excommunicating her father when he attempted to intervene. He confirmed that Fred Phelps was in hospice care following Nathan Phelps' Facebook post on the matter, but he didn't comment on Pastor Phelps' excommunication.
