Before he joined the Westboro Baptist Church, he was a filmmaker who wanted to document the church. After listening to one of Fred Phelps' sermons, he converted to the church and moved his family to Kansas. When his daughter, Lauren Drain, started to question the beliefs of the church, Steve was the first to say his own daughter should be kicked out. At some point in August of 2013, Drain and a group of fellow church members turned on the Phelps elders, officially removing Shirley Phelps from the leadership of the church and excommunicating her father when he attempted to intervene. He confirmed that Fred Phelps was in hospice care following Nathan Phelps' Facebook post on the matter, but he didn't comment on Pastor Phelps' excommunication.
