Tarek Namouz is a British Muslim who defrauded thousands of pounds in COVID-19 bailouts from his local authority to fund Islamic terrorism in Syria. ==Biography== In September 2014, Namouz, at the time a pub landlord, raped an 18-year-old girl in his pub in Wood Green, London. He waited for the victim to go to the toilet before closing the pub and locking up for the night, trapping her inside, before assaulting her when she came out. When the victim tried to fight back Namouz beat her badly before raping her. The victim was able to escape and contacted the police, who arrested Namouz later that night. In February the following year he was sentenced to 10 years in prison for rape and actual bodily harm. By November 2020 Namouz had been released on licence and was running a barber's shop in Hammersmith. Following the COVID-19 relief pandemic, Namouz began claiming relief loans from Hammersmith and Fulham Council ostensibly to help his business recover. However, Namouz had made contact via WhatsApp with an Islamic State operative in Syria named Yahya Ahmed Alia, and between November 2020 and May 2021 Namouz used a money transfer bureau to send Alia thousands of pounds in relief grants to finance Islamic State operations. Namouz would later claim he believed the money would be used for charitable purposes, but in their WhatsApp messages Namouz and Alia openly discussed buying weapons and safe houses for IS fighters. Alia was arrested in May 2021 after concerns were raised about his links to Islamic extremism. When officers arrived at his flat to arrest him he denied owning a phone, but one was found hidden in a drawer. On this phone officers found seven month's worth of messages between Namouz and Alia and a number of Islamic State propaganda videos downloaded from Telegram showing how to build explosives and carry out knife attacks. Namouz's licence was revoked and he was returned to prison while police further investigated his links to Islamic State. Detectives found record of Namouz having sent Β£11, 280 to Alia, but while awaiting trial Namouz boasted that he had sent over Β£25, 000. A further Β£3000 believed to be intended for the same purpose were found in Namouz's flat. In December 2022 Namouz was convicted of funding terrorism and possessing material likely to be useful for terrorist purposes. In January 2023 he was jailed for 12 years. After the sentence was read out Namouz shouted at those in the courtroom that Allah would destroy them and he would see them in Hell. ==References== <references />
