Thomas McMahon (1948 - ) was a member of the Provisional IRA and a bomb-maker for them. In his infamous crime, McMahon murdered Lord Louis Mountbatten by planting a bomb under his boat, Shadow V, then detonated it from a headland overlooking the harbor. The explosion also killed Baroness Brabourne, Nicholas Knatchbull and Paul Maxwell who was a sailor. The Garda police caught McMahon as he was leaving the crime scene, due to the scent of the bomb on his clothes. He was then tried and sentenced to life imprisonment. During his jail time, McMahon gave up his IRA ties. In 1998, McMahon was let go thanks to the Good Friday Agreement. As for the rest of his life, McMahon is living with his wife Rose and two sons.
