He also served as the inagural commander of the Fedayeen Saddam death squad. Uday was his father's designated successor until he sustained severe injuries in a failed assassination attempt in 1996. Following the United States-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, he was killed alongside his brother Qusay and nephew Mustapha by an American task force after a prolonged gunfight in Mosul. ==Background== At the time of his birth, his father was in prison. Numerous secret messages were written on his diapers to pass along to his father. As a child, he and his brother Qusay would often oversee executions with their father. He studied at the Baghdad Medical College, in which he was there for 3 days. Uday later studied at the College of Engineering and obtained a Bachelor of Engineering at the University of Baghdad. In 1998, he received a Doctorate in Political Science, with his thesis being called "The world after the Cold War", predicting the US would no longer become a World power by 2015. However, he was accused of using his influence to advance in his studies, with nobody giving him low grades out of fear. In 1985, he founded a Ba'athist radio station and in 1990, he started a Ba'athist newspaper called Babel, targeted towards youth. Although he had wanted to marry a girl at his university, his father arranged him to marry the daughter of his cousin Ali Hassan al-Majid, better known as Chemical Ali. They had 2 kids but later divorced. He was later forced to marry Suja, the daughter of his half-uncle Barzan when banished in Switzerland, and Suha, the daughter of Izzat Ibrahim ad-Douri, who had a son with him. Both have accused him of treating them poorly and rejecting him because of his violent nature. Uday was known for expressing his brutality towards the citizens of Iraq, from raping many women, torturing the Iraqi football team with punishments such as amputations, and killing his father's bodyguard Kamal Hanna at a party for being introducing to his father to his second wife (with Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak, who was a guest, witnessed), among other brutal crimes. His father even banished him to Switzerland for his brutality. As the head of the Iraqi Olympic Committee, he oversaw the torture of athletes working under him if that were considered unsatisfactory, with methods such as flogging, kicking concrete balls, and being dragged into a gravel pit with sewage. He would often crash weddings to rape and sometimes murder brides even though he could have easily charmed any woman he wanted with his vast wealth and power. He was even banished to Switzerland by his own father a few times for his brutality. He also forced Latif Yahya, an Iraqi Kurdish classmate of his who bore a slight resemblance to him, to become his body double, in which he would often mistreat him, from putting him in solitary confinement when he refused to become his body double to even shooting at him when a woman interested in Uday became more interested in Latif. His father Saddam was said to have destroyed some of Uday's car collection because he was to brutal even for him. In 1998, he was accused of kidnapping a 13 year old girl, keeping her for 3 days, and raping her. After her father demanded justice, Uday sent 2 guards to threaten him. Uday later ordered the father to bring his other daughters, 14 and 12 to a party, exclaiming "Your daughters will be my girlfriends, or I'll wipe you off the face of the earth." The father complied with this order, fearing for his family's life. In December of 1996, when he was driving, he was ambushed by gunmen and shot, giving him permanent injuries such as a limp. He was about to be heir of Saddam Hussein until Saddam decided Qusay was heir, due to the extreme brutality of his actions, even for his father. Shortly after the American-led coalition invaded Iraq, Uday and his brother went into hiding. There was a $15 million reward for his capture. He, Qusay and his nephew Mustapha were killed in Mosul in a 3 hour firefight with US troops. It was believed that Sheik Nawaf al-Zaydan Muhhamad, a family member who owned the property, tipped them off to the US military. To prove that they were dead, the US Military relaxed pictures of their bodies. After his death at the hands of American forces, celebratory gunfire could be heard all over Iraq for several nights. Uday was depicted in movies such as The Devil's Double in which he and his double Latif Yahya were portrayed Dominic Cooper. ==Trivia== *Despite the sanctions against Iraq, Uday managed to have a Yahoo email address to which he was accused of sending death threats. *After his death, the contents found in his briefcase were Viagra, bottles of cologne, packages of underwear, dress shirts, a tie, and a condom.
