  • April 6 to May 29 - The Fall of Constantinople: Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II lays siege to the city of Constantinople. Numerous atrocities are perpetrated by the Ottomans, including the destruction of Orthodox churches, widespread looting, the rape of women and young girls, and enslavement of children. The siege results in the death of Byzantine Emperor Constantine XI, marking the final collapse of the Byzantine Empire. The Fall of Constantinople also marks the definitive end of the Middle Ages.
