• July 1 - Napoleon Bonaparte launches his military expedition to Egypt, conquering the Ottoman province as of a result. Napoleon then went on to launch an initially successful expedition into Syria, before being eventually defeated and forced to withdraw in 1801.
• Unknown - The Alien Friends Act and the Sedition Act are passed by President John Adams. This criminalizes criticism of the American government, and also makes criticism of the government for naturalized citizens punishable by deportation.
