- June 17 - The New Zealand Wars begin with the Wairau Affray, in which Chiefs Te Rauparaha and Te Rangihaeata of the Ngāti Toa tribe protested against the settlement and burned down several huts. In retaliation, Henry Augustus Thompson attempted to arrest the chiefs. however, his forces were defeated by the Māori.
