- October 16 to 18 - The Raid on Harpers Ferry: abolitionist John Brown attempts to instigate a slave revolt by taking over the United States arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. The raid fails and Brown's party is defeated by a company of U.S. Marines. Brown was found guilty of treason two months later and would be executed by hanging.
