Events

• December 20 - Following Abraham Lincoln's election to the U.S. Presidency on November 6 of that year, South Carolina becomes the first state to secede from the United States. Four days later, it officially issues the "Declaration of the Immediate Causes Which Induce and Justify the Secession of South Carolina from the Federal Union", analogous to the United States Declaration of Independence. Several more states secede in 1861 which ultimately leads to the formation of the Confederate States of America on February 8, 1861.
