- January 7, - An impeachment-related resolution is introduced by James Mitchell Ashley against President Andrew Johnson, and rather than going to a direct vote for impeaching the President, it instructed the Judiciary Committee to inquire into President Johnson's conduct. The bill passed in the house 107-89. Before this, there were efforts as early as 1866 to remove Johnson.
- May - Former Confederate President Jefferson Davis is released on bail.
- December 7 - The U.S. House voted against impeachment 108-59, with 66 Republicans and 42 Democrats voting against Impeachment. Johnson would later face another inquiry in 1868 (which ultimately led to his impeachment)
