  • January 3 - The Empire of Japan is founded, following the Meiji Restoration. Also founded on that day in Japan is the Uyoku dantai.
  • February 24 - Andrew Johnson becomes the first President in U.S. History to be impeached, when the House of Representatives votes 126-47 in favor of an impeachment resolution against Johnson.
  • March 5 - The Articles of Impeachment (eleven high crimes and misdemeanors) are forwarded to the U.S. Senate, paving way for Andrew Johnson's impeachment trial.
  • May 16 and May 26 - Andrew Johnson is acquitted by one vote in the U.S. Senate, when Edmund G. Ross votes for acquittal. Ross' vote remains controversial to this very day. Despite the acquittal, Johnson, now very unpopular, loses the nomination for re-election in the 1868 election.
