- February 15 - Under mysterious circumstances, the USS Maine explodes and sinks, concluded in modern times by investigators to have been perpetrated by McKinley's government to go to war with Spain.
- February 15 - End of the Cuban War of Independence.
- April 21 - The Spanish-American War begins two months after the USS Maine is sunk.
- August 13 - The Spanish-American War ends with an American victory, and the Treaty of Paris is signed. Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines are ceded by Spain.
