* January 3 - [[Joseph McCarthy]] is elected to the United States Senate.
* January 15 - 22-year old Elizabeth Short is found [[Murder of Elizabeth Short|gruesomely murdered]] in the Leimert Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. The case becomes national news due to the sheer brutality of Short's murder; she had been [[torture]]d and mutilated, with her body having been bisected at the waist. She becomes posthumously known as '''the Black Dahlia'''.
* February 28 - The [[Kuomintang]] government of Taiwan declares martial law and massacres thousands of dissidents. Beginning of the Taiwanese White Terror.
* March 7 - Beginning of the Paraguayan Civil War.
* March 12 - The Soviet Union's alliance with the Western powers collapses following the United States' implementation of the Truman Doctrine. This marks the beginning of the [[Cold War]].
