- January 3 - Joseph McCarthy is elected to the United States Senate.
- January 15 - 22-year old Elizabeth Short is found gruesomely murdered in the Leimert Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. The case becomes national news due to the sheer brutality of Short's murder; she had been tortured and mutilated, with her body having been bisected at the waist. She becomes posthumously known as the Black Dahlia.
- February 28 - The Kuomintang government of Taiwan declares martial law and massacres thousands of dissidents. Beginning of the Taiwanese White Terror.
- March 7 - Beginning of the Paraguayan Civil War.
- March 12 - The Soviet Union's alliance with the Western powers collapses following the United States' implementation of the Truman Doctrine. This marks the beginning of the Cold War.
- April 7 - The Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party is founded.
- May 3 - Japan passes a new constitution, forcing Emperor Hirohito to relinquish his status as an absolute monarch and formally dissolving the Empire of Japan.
- August 15 - The Partition of India: the British Raj is dissolved as the Dominion of India is divided into the Republic of India and the Federation of Pakistan. This results in the displacement of between 10 and 20 million people, as well as an outbreak of sectarian violence in the region.
- August 20 - End of the Paraguayan Civil War.
- October 21 - Chin Peng is named General Secretary of the Communist Party of Malaya.
- October 22 - Beginning of the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947.
- November 29 to December 22 - The Syrian government launches a pogrom against Jews living in the city of Aleppo, leaving approximately 75 dead and hundreds injured, as well as leaving hundreds of buildings, including homes, schools, and synagogues, destroyed.
- December 30 - Irgun massacres 45 Palestinian Arabs and injures 91 at the Haifa Oil Refinery in Haifa, Mandatory Palestine.
