- February 22 to May 3 - The Texarkana Moonlight Murders: five people are murdered and three are injured by an unidentified serial killer known as the Phantom Killer in Texarkana, Texas over a span of three-and-a-half months.
- March 2 - Ho Chi Minh is elected President of North Vietnam.
- March 15 - The NKVD is dissolved. The MVD is subsequently established as the new secret police of the Soviet Union.

- September 30 to October 1 - Ten high-ranking members of the Nazi Party are hanged at Nuremberg by the International Military Tribunal for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during World War II.
- October 10 to November 9 - The Noakhali riots take place in Bengal: the Muslim National Guard kill Hindus in Bengal en masse, leaving an estimated 5000 people dead.
