April 29 - Dachau concentration camp is liberated by the American army. The Dachau Massacre subsequently occurs.
April 30 - Adolf Hitler and his wife Eva Braun commit suicide inside the Führerbunker in Berlin. In his last will and testament, he names Karl Dönitz President of Germany and Joseph Goebbels Chancellor of Germany.
May 1 - Joseph Goebbels and his wife Magda commit suicide after poisoning their children with cyanide.
May 2 - Karl Dönitz establishes the Flensburg Government after being appointed President of Germany.
May 3 - The Italian Social Republic surrenders its last remaining territories. End of the Allies' offensive in Italy.
May 7 - Nazi Germany surrenders, ending World War II in Europe.

May 9 - The League of Communists of Yugoslavia declares Yugoslavia to be liberated from Ustaše rule. Ustaše leader Ante Pavelić flees into exile.

August 6 - The first atomic bomb to be used in warfare, called "Little Boy", is detonated over Hiroshima in an attempt to coerce Imperial Japan into accepting the Potsdam Declaration.
August 9 - The atomic bomb "Fat Man" is detonated over Nagasaki. The Soviet Union subsequently launches an invasion of Japanese territory, terminating the Japanese control of Manchukuo, Mengjiang (Inner Mongolia), northern Korea (North Korea), Karafuto, and the Chishima Islands (Kuril Islands).
August 10 - The Chinese Civil War resumes between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party of China.
August 16 - The Second Philippine Republic and the Reorganized National Government of the Republic of China both collapse.
August 17 - Beginning of the Indonesian War of Independence.
September 2 - Imperial Japan accepts the Potsdam Declaration, ending World War II outside of Europe. The Axis Powers are officially dissolved.
September 2 - Hồ Chí Minh declares Vietnam to be independent from France. Emperor Bảo Đại is subsequently forced to abdicate.
October 11 - Francisco Franco orders all Spanish forces to withdraw from the Tangier International Zone.
October 29 - Getúlio Vargas is deposed as President of Brazil by the Brazilian military.
November 1 - The Night of the Trains: Irgun and Lehi conduct a joint sabotage operation to sabotage British railways all across Mandatory Palestine.
November 20 - The Nuremberg trials begin: trials against 22 Nazis for war crimes of World War II start at the Palace of Justice, Nuremberg.
November 29 - Josip Broz Tito declares the formation of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
