March 4 - Ove Andersson kill 1 person and injured 6 others during a school dance.
April 17 to 20 - The Bay of Pigs invasion: an army of Cuban dissidents trained and funded by the United States invades Cuba in an attempt to depose Fidel Castro. The invasion fails abysmally when Cuba learns of it ahead of time.
May 14 - A Freedom Riders bus is fire-bombed near Anniston, Alabama, and the civil rights protestors are beaten by an angry mob of Ku Klux Klan members.
May 16 - The Supreme Council for National Reconstruction comes to power in South Korea after staging a successful coup.
May 30 - Rafael Trujillo is assassinated when his blue 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air is ambushed on a road outside the Dominican capital.
