• March 14 - Jack Ruby is found guilty of murdering Lee Harvey Oswald and is sentenced to death.
• May 2 - An explosion caused by Viet Cong commandos causes the escort carrier USS Card to sink in the port of Saigon, resulting in 5 civilian deaths.
• June 3 - South Korean President Park Chung-hee declares martial law in Seoul, after 10,000 student demonstrators overpower police.
• June 21 - Civil Rights activists James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner are abducted and murdered in Neshoba County, Mississippi by members of the Ku Klux Klan.
• July 4 - Beginning of the Rhodesian Bush War.
• July 10 - Joe Gaetjens (Haitian soccer player known for playing for the United States national team in the 1950 FIFA World Cup and scoring a goal against England) is kidnapped, tortured and probably murdered by François Duvalier's secret police.
• August 2 - The 1964 Gulf of Tonkin incident takes place.
• August 7 - The United States Congress passes the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, formally entering the Vietnam War.
• August 11 - Spanish dictator Francisco Franco survives an assassination attempt in Madrid by Scottish anarchist Stuart Christie.
• October 14 - Leonid Brezhnev is named General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, after Nikita Khrushchev is removed from power.
• December 1 - Gustavo Díaz Ordaz of the Institutional Revolutionary Party is elected President of Mexico.
• December 24 - The Brinks Hotel in Saigon, Vietnam is bombed by the Viet Cong, resulting in the deaths of two US soldiers and injuries to a further 60 people, including civilians.
