- January 17 - The Khmer Rouge launches their first major offensive in the Cambodian Civil War.
- January 17 to 29 - North Korean commandos raid the Blue House in Seoul, South Korea in an attempt to assassinate South Korean President Park Chung-hee. The raid fails and Park is unharmed.
- January 30 - The Tet Offensive is launched by the Viet Cong.
- March 16 - The My Lai Massacre takes place when American soldiers under command of General Samuel Koster massacre between 347 and 504 unarmed people in Sơn Tịnh District, South Vietnam.
- April 4 - Martin Luther King Jr. is assassinated by James Earl Ray at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. Riots erupt in major American cities, lasting for several days afterwards.
- May 24 - The Jewish Defense League is founded by Rabbi Meir Kahane.
- June 3 - Valerie Solanas attempts to kill Andy Warhol at his studio in New York City by shooting him three times.
- June 6 - Robert F. Kennedy is mortally wounded by Sirhan B. Sirhan shortly after midnight at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. He is pronounced dead at 1:44 A.M. the following morning.
- June 23 - Beginning of Operation Condor.
- August 20 to 21 - Five Warsaw Pact countries (the Soviet Union, Poland, Bulgaria, East Germany and Hungary) invade Czechoslovakia to suppress the reform process in the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. First Secretary Alexander Dubček is forced to resign and Gustáv Husák is appointed as his successor.
- September 23 - The Tet Offensive comes to an end.

- October 12 - Francisco Macías Nguema is elected the first President of Equatorial Guinea.
- November 5 - Richard Nixon wins the 1968 Presidential Election, defeating Hubert Humphrey and George Wallace.
- November 19 - Moussa Traoré takes power in Mali following a successful coup d'état.
- December 20 - The first murders attributed to the Zodiac Killer take place when 17-year old David Faraday and 16-year old Betty Jensen are killed on Lake Herman Road in Benicia, California.
- December 26 - The Communist Party of the Philippines is founded.
