  • June 18 - Leopoldo Galtieri is removed as President of Argentina.
  • July 8 - Iraqi President Saddam Hussein survives an assassination attempt by the Islamic Dawa Party in the village of Dujail.
  • August 20 - Carl Robert Brown goes on a shooting rampage in a welding shop located in Miami, Florida, killing 8 people. He was later shot and killed by police officers while attempting to flee the scene of the attack.
  • September 16 to 18 - The Sabra and Shatila Massacre occurs in West Beirut, Lebanon, carried out by pro-Israel militias. Between 460 and 3,500 civilians are killed. Defense Minister Ariel Sharon takes personal responsibility for the massacre.
  • November 7 - Kenan Evren is elected President of Turkey, restoring democratic elections after 2 years of military rule.
  • November 12 - Yuri Andropov, former chairman of the KGB, is named the new General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union after the death of Leonid Brezhnev.
  • December 6 - Droppin' Well disco bombing committed by the Irish National Liberation Army kills 17 (including 6 civilians) and injures 30.As a result, Ireland outlaws the INLA shortly afterwards.
