Asa H. Coon (September 22, 1993 - October 10, 2007) was an American student who perpetrated the SuccessTech Academy shooting on October 10th, 2007. Armed with two revolvers and folding knives, Asa injured two teachers and two students before ultimately committing suicide.
Early Life edit
Asa H. Coon was born to mother Lori Looney and uninvolved father Thomas Coon on September 22, 1993.[1]
Asa Coon's early life was fraught with neglect, crime and abuse. In 1997, at age three, a caseworker for the New York Cortland County Social Services Department was called to visit the home found it to be in squalid condition, with garbage strewn throughout the property. Neighbors had also reported that Asa’s older brothers, Stephen and Daniel, had threatened them with weapons that included rocks, knives, and a fake bomb. The children would later be taken from their mother's care after she was found guilty of neglect. [2]
Eventually the family would be reunited and move to Cleveland, Ohio. Asa, at age eleven, would be arrested for attacking his mother, yelling obscenities at her, and punching her in the left eye. As punishment, Asa to attend six hours per week of counseling, attend an anger management course, and perform community service. During theses counseling sessions, Asa made suicidal statements and was prescribed medications to alleviate his depression and hyperactivity.
Despite these difficulties, caseworker reports show Coon to be nice and well mannered.
Shooting edit
Background edit
Two days prior to the shooting, Coon had received a three-day suspension from the SuccessTech alternative high school for an altercation with another student regarding the existence of God.[3][4] Coon said he was upset as his teachers would not listen to what he had to say regarding the fight, according to his uncle, Larry Looney.[5] According to fellow students and teachers, Coon had apparently been a target of bullying by students at the school for his Gothic appearance and eccentric behavior, and had made threats of violence in front of students and teachers the week before the shooting.[6][7][8] It was said by a friend of him, Joseph Flectcher, that Coon had been "pushed too far" and that teachers were unable to help with his problems.[9] One of Coon's teachers and victims, Michael Grassie, said that Coon was frustrated for being given a bad grade in History class,[10] causing Coon to incite his teacher to fight against him.[11]
Juvenile Court records show that Coon had a criminal history and mental health problems since 2005, and threatened to commit suicide while in a mental health facility in summer 2006.[12][13]
Perpetration edit
On Wednesday, October 10, 2007, Coon entered the five-story school building shortly before 1:00 p.m. EST, armed with two handguns (a .22-caliber revolver and a .38-caliber revolver),[14][15] a box of additional rounds of ammunition for each pistol, and three folding knives inside a duffel bag.[16] Wearing a Marilyn Manson concert shirt, black jeans, and black-painted fingernails,[17] he walked to the fourth floor and went to the men's bathroom in order to load two revolvers.[18]
At 1:06 p.m., after 14-year old Michael Peek punched Coon in the face for bumping into him, Coon shot Peek in the abdomen as he walked away,[14][19][20] also hitting 17-year-old Darnell Rodgers on his elbow in the same hallway. Coon then entered social studies teacher Michael Grassie's classroom to shoot him in the chest. A second teacher, David Kachadourian, was shot in the back of his shoulder while in the hallway evacuating his students.[14][21] During the entire shooting, Coon was said to be cursing.[17] At the end, Coon killed himself by shooting in the right side of his head.[18][22][23]
The school was placed on Code Blue lockdown shortly after the shooting.
