A death threat is a threat made by an individual or a group, mostly bullies, to harass a target. It is often used to intimidate the victim, either to try to murder them or to manipulate them into killing themselves.

In most jurisdictions, death threats are a serious type of criminal offence. Death threats are often covered by coercion statutes. Despite this, death threateners tend to believe that death threats are still part of freedom of speech.

Methods edit

Death threats are often made in social sites, and thus may count as cyberbullying, but they are also communicated through a wide range of media, among these letters, newspaper publications, telephone calls and e-mail. Some threats are directed towards a political figure, as was the case with QAnon, which can also be counted as treason in that case. Death threats can also be used against location figures like a building, to incite a terrorist attack against them, as was the case with the capitol insurrection.
