Jonel Montalez Nuezca (1974-2021) was a police officer charged with 2 counts of murder. [1] He lived in Barangay Cabayaosan, Paniqui, Tarlac, the same city and barangay (a district in the city) in which he did his crimes. He was born on October 17, 1974, and he died on November 30, 2021. His death was confirmed a day later.
He murdered Sonia Gregorio, 55 and Frank Gregorio, 25 on December 20, 2020. Sonia and Frank were mother and child. [2] In 2010, he was suspended in his job as a police officer for refusing a drug test. 6 years after, he was charged with neglect after refusing to attend a police hearing over a drug case.[3]
Jonel Nuezca has a daughter.
2020 Tarlac Shooting
The incident started when Nuezca trespassed in the Gregorio household over the use of a noisemaker cannon, or a boga. Nuezca, in civilian clothes, confronted the Gregorios, shouting at them and even swearing at them, despite the presence of other children. [4]
The situation intensified when Nuezca's daughter, Elisha intervened by yelling "My father is a policeman!" to the two Gregorios. Once Sonia Gregorio replied back "I dont care.", Jonel Nuezca then threatened to kill them right before shooting the two Gregorios. [5]
Jonel Nuezca then attempted to flee the scene, however he was arrested less than an hour later.
The Aftermath
The incident became Number 1 trending in Social Media just a day after the incident. Celebrities and ordinary people alike condemned the shooting. The news even reached Philippine Congress, and even President Rodrigo Duterte. A close friend of the President, Bong Go, stated that the incident angered the President. [6] Politicians from both the opposition block and the majority block condemned the shootings.
On January 10, 2021, Jonel Nuezca pleaded "not guilty", in which he was arrested 7 months later at New Bilibid Prison. He died on November 30, 2021, after collapsing while walking outside of his dormitory. [7]
