Vladislav Roslyakov
Vladislav Roslyakov was the eighteen-year-old perpetrator of the massacre at Kerch Polytechnic Institute on October 17, 2018. The shooting resulted in the death of 21 individuals, more than 50 injuries, approximately 12 in critical condition, and 3 comatose. The attack ultimately came to an end when Roslyakov took his life in the library.
The Shooting
On Wednesday, October 17, 2018, eighteen-year-old Vladislav Roslyakov entered Kerch Polytechnic Institute located in Crimea, Russia, marking the beginning of his attack. Roslyakov was donned in black jeans, a black hoodie (which later appeared to have been discarded at some point), and a white t-shirt with black text plastered across it displaying the word ненависть. ненависть, when translated in English, means 'hatred'.
The perpetrator was armed with a Turkish pump shotgun
Hatsan, along with a bag containing 10 homemade bombs and dozens of rounds. Vladislav armed himself with a total of 150 bullets, according to officials, and reportedly ran from room to room, firing rounds at anyone he spotted, beginning his deadly rampage in the institute's canteen.
Investigators have disclosed that Roslyakov had detonated a bomb in the canteen. Another explosive had detonated in the institute's dining area and, according the officials, was filled with metal objects. Further information is yet to be disclosed.
The perpetrator's body was discovered by investigators in the library on the second floor. Upon further examination, it is assumed that Vladislav died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Perpetrator
Vladislav Roslyakov was an eighteen-year-old student attending Kerch Polytechnic Institute as a senior,
although reports claim that he had also expressed an aspiration of joining the military. Roslyakov had no apparent troubles with the law prior to the attack and had received a gun license earlier that month, legally permitting him to own a firearm.
Motive
A girl claiming to be Vladislav's ex-girlfriend states that the perpetrator would confide in her his struggles regarding bullying, despite contradicting reports stating that Roslyakov did not, in fact, endure bullying from other students. A former friend of the perpetrator discloses that Vladislav "really hated the college because of its evil teachers, and he hinted that he would get back at them". Roslyakov "never showed any signs of aggression" and "never had any problems [with the police], and he was getting a stipend" says Sergey Aksyonov, head of Crimea's local government. During his freshman year, Roslyakov was reported to have carried a knife around with him, but there are no reported counts regarding any use of the knife.
