- January 11 - Hong Xiuquan declares himself "Heavenly King" of a breakaway state known as the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, officially beginning the Taiping Rebellion.
- July 1 - End of the Mariposa War.
- December 2 - President Charles-Louis Napoleon Bonaparte stages a third, and successful coup d'état, this time against the Second French Republic, as he was limited to one term (which ended in 1852), and in the process, successfully dissolves the National Assembly and granted him dictatorial powers, leading to the Republic's downfall.
