- February 12 - Puyi, the 6-year old Emperor of the Qing dynasty, is forced to abdicate, ending the Xinhai Revolution as well as marking the end of 2,132 years of Imperial Chinese rule and 276 years of the Qing dynasty. The Republic of China is subsequently declared by Sun Yat-sen.
- March 10 - Yuan Shikai is named Provisional President of the Republic of China, replacing Sun Yat-sen.
- April 15 - The RMS Titanic sinks after striking an iceberg, four days into her maiden voyage. An estimated 1,490–1,635 people die in the accident.
