- March 8 to 9 - Pancho Villa leads about 500 Mexican raiders in an attack against Columbus, New Mexico, killing 12 U.S. soldiers. A garrison of the U.S. 13th Cavalry Regiment fights back and drives them away.
- May 15 - 17-year old farmhand Jesse Washington is brutally lynched in Waco, Texas after being accused of raping and murdering his white employer's wife.
- July 1 - Beginning of the Battle of the Somme.
- November 7 - U.S. President Woodrow Wilson wins reelection during the 1916 presidential election.
