- January 27 - Federico Tinoco Granados seizes power in Costa Rica via a coup d'état.
- February 4 - Talaat Pasha is named Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire.
- March 8 to 16 - The February Revolution: Tsar Nicholas II is forced to abdicate, marking the dissolution of the Russian Empire. The Russian Provisional Government is established in the interim.
- April 7 - Vladimir Lenin publishes the "April Theses".
- May - The Russian Social Democratic Labour Party (the precursor to the Communist Party of the Soviet Union) is founded.
- July 1 to 12 - The Manchu Restoration: General Zhang Xun briefly restores the Qing dynasty, installing the deposed Puyi as Emperor. The restoration lasts only a few days, and is quickly reversed by Kuomintang troops.
- November 7 - Vladimir Lenin and his Bolsheviks stage a successful coup, overthrowing the provisional government and declaring the formation of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, with Lenin as the head of government. This marks the beginning of the Russian Civil War.
- November 8 - Beginning of the Ukrainian War of Independence.
- December 20 - The Cheka is founded.
