  • April 3 - Joseph Stalin becomes General Secretary of the Russian Communist Party, succeeding Vyacheslav Molotov.
  • April 7 - The Teapot Dome scandal: United States Secretary of the Interior Albert Fall leases Teapot Dome oil reserves in Wyoming, as well as two locations in California, to private oil companies at low rates without competitive bidding. It is one of the first major political scandals in American history.
  • June 22 - British field marshal Sir Henry Wilson is assassinated in London by the Irish Republican Army.

  • December 29 - The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), better known as the Soviet Union, is formally created following the signing of the Treaty on the Creation of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. 15 sovereign states (Russia, Ukraine, Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Moldova, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan) comprise the USSR, with all of them ultimately under the rule of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, formerly known as the Russian Communist Party.
