December 29 - The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), better known as the Soviet Union, is formally created following the signing of the Treaty on the Creation of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. 15 sovereign states (Russia, Ukraine, Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Moldova, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan) comprise the USSR, with all of them ultimately under the rule of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, formerly known as the Russian Communist Party.
