February 25 - The Communist Party of China begins to distance itself from the Soviet Union, beginning the Sino-Soviet split.
March 2 - The National Party passes the Separate Representation of Voters Act, making non-whites ineligible to vote in South Africa.
June 23 - Gamal Abdel Nasser is elected President of Egypt.
June 23 - Beginning of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956.
July 18 - Mátyás Rákosi is forced to resign as General Secretary of the Hungarian Working People's Party.
August 30 - The August Faction incident: a group of pro-Soviet/pro-Chinese activists within the Workers' Party of Korea attempt to remove Kim Il-sung from power. The attempt fails and the participants are arrested and later executed.
October 21 - Władysław Gomułka is named First Secretary of the Polish United Workers' Party following the death of Bolesław Bierut.
October 29 to November 7 - The Suez Crisis takes place.
November 1 - The Indochinese Communist Party is reorganized into the Workers' Party of Vietnam. Hồ Chí Minh is subsequently named First Secretary.
November 4 - The Communist Party of the Soviet Union invades Hungary, forcing Imre Nagy to resign as prime minister.
November 11 - End of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956.
December 10 - The People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola is founded by Agostinho Neto.
