• January 27 - The Paris Peace Accords, formally titled the "Agreement on Ending the War and Restoring Peace in Vietnam," intended to halt the fighting between North and South Vietnam and end U.S. military involvement in the Vietnam War, are signed.
• February 21 - The Vientiane Treaty is signed between the Kingdom of Laos and the Pathet Lao.
• March 1 - Black September attacks the Saudi embassy in Khartoum, Sudan, taking 10 people hostage and killing 3.
• April 21 - The serial killer Edmund Kemper surrenders to police.
• April 22 - William Ray Bonner goes on a shooting spree through the South Side area of Los Angeles, California, leaving seven people dead and nine others injured.
• April 27 - The Expulsion of the Chagossians comes to an end.
• June 9 - Francisco Franco steps down as Prime Minister of Spain, but continues to remain Head of State.
• June 27 - Juan María Bordaberry commits a coup to perpetrate a military dictatorship in Uruguay.
• July 5 - Juvénal Habyarimana leads a successful coup of the Rwandan presidency, deposing the Parmehutu regime.
• July 7 - Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging is founded.
• July 10 - Oil heir John Paul Getty III is kidnapped in Rome by members of the 'Ndrangheta crime syndicate. They demand $3.2 million from his family as ransom.
• July 29 - A faction of the Chilean army and the Fatherland and Liberty Nationalist Front attempt a failed attempt to overthrow President Salvador Allende. This event is known as the Tanquetazo, and it would serve as a precedent for what would happen later.
• August 3 - The Houston Mass Murders end when Dean Corll kills his last known victim, 13-year old James Stanton Dreymala.
• August 8 - Dean Corll was assasinated by accomplice Elmer Wayne Henley Jr..
• September 11 - Augusto Pinochet seizes power from incumbent President Salvador Allende in Chile following a successful U.S.-backed coup.
• September 22 - Henry Kissinger is appointed United States Secretary of State.
• October 6 to 25 - The Yom Kippur War is fought.
• October 10 - Spiro Agnew resigns as Vice President of the United States.
• October 12 - Juan Peron is elected President of Argentina for the second time after returning from exile.
• November 25 - Georgios Papadopoulos is overthrown as dictator of Greece by his former co-conspirator Dimitrios Ioannidis.
• December 15 - John Paul Getty III is found alive and safe.
• December 20 - Luis Carrero Blanco, Prime Minister of Spain, is assassinated by the separatist group ETA.
