• June 21 - Menachem Begin is elected Prime Minister of Israel.
• July 5 - General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq overthrows Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the first elected Prime Minister of Pakistan.

• August 12 to 20 - A pogrom is carried out against Tamils in Sri Lanka following the 1977 general elections, where the nationalistic Tamil United Liberation Front won a plurality of minority Sri Lankan Tamil votes in which it stood for secession. Around 300 Tamils are killed in the riots.
• October 13 - Lufthansa Flight 181 is hijacked by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine in an attempt to secure the release of imprisoned Red Army Faction leaders in German prisons. 1 crew member is killed while three others are injured.
