• August 12 to 20 - A pogrom is carried out against Tamils in Sri Lanka following the 1977 general elections, where the nationalistic Tamil United Liberation Front won a plurality of minority Sri Lankan Tamil votes in which it stood for secession. Around 300 Tamils are killed in the riots.
