February 3 - Mengistu Haile Mariam becomes Chairman of the Derg. Beginning of the Qey Shibir.
March 2 - Muammar Gaddafi proclaims the formation of the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya.
April 7 - The Falange de las J.O.N.S is dissolved.
June 21 - Menachem Begin is elected Prime Minister of Israel.
July 5 - General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq overthrows Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the first elected Prime Minister of Pakistan.
July 12 - Siad Barre invades Ethiopia, beginning the Ogadan War.
August 10 - David Berkowitz is captured in Yonkers, New York, after over a year of murders in New York City as the "Son of Sam".
August 12 to 20 - A pogrom is carried out against Tamils in Sri Lanka following the 1977 general elections, where the nationalistic Tamil United Liberation Front won a plurality of minority Sri Lankan Tamil votes in which it stood for secession. Around 300 Tamils are killed in the riots.
October 13 - Lufthansa Flight 181 is hijacked by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine in an attempt to secure the release of imprisoned Red Army Faction leaders in German prisons. 1 crew member is killed while three others are injured.
November 19 - The Federation of Arab Republics collapses.
