January 6 - Kazakh Security Council Chairman Nursultan Nazarbayev declares a state of emergency after riots break out across Kazakhstan. He is subsequently forced to resign from his post.
January 7 - Gregory and Travis McMichael and William Bryan are sentenced to life in prison without parole for the 2020 murder of Ahmaud Arbery.
January 15 - Malik Akram takes four congregants hostage at the Congregation Beth Israel synagogue in Colleyville, Texas, triggering an eleven hour standoff until an FBI team storms the synagogue and kills him.
January 20 - A car bombing at a prison in al-Hasakah, Syria, triggers a riot and mass escape involving hundreds of Islamic State detainees. Fighting begins as they attempt to gain control of the city and take 23 hostages.
