June 29 - The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant declares itself to be a worldwide caliphate, claiming global authority over all Muslims worldwide. Their leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, is formally recognized as Caliph.
June 30 - The Free Sunnis of Baalbek Brigade pledges allegiance to Islamic State.
July 17 - Eric Garner dies after being choked by police officer Daniel Pantaleo.
August 7 - The Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia find Nuon Chea, right-hand man of former dictator Pol Pot, guilty of crimes against humanity committed during the Khmer Rouge regime and sentence him to life in prison.
December 23 - Luka Magnotta is sentenced to life in prison for his role in the murder of Jun Li. He will be eligible for parole in 25 years.
