- May 3 - Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus, and Michelle Knight escape from Ariel Castro's captivity after being rescued by Castro's neighbors.
- May 22 - 8-year old Gabriel Fernandez is found dead at his home in Palmdale, California, after being fatally beaten to death by his stepfather, Isauro Aguirre, who had subjected Fernandez to similar abuse for the past six months.

- June 11 - Hatla massacre: Syrian opposition fighters and Al-Nusra Front militants attack the Syrian village of Hatla, killing 30 to 60 Shi'ite Muslim villagers.
- June 17 - 27-year old Odin Lloyd is murdered at an industrial park in North Attleborough, Massachusetts, one mile from the home of NFL player Aaron Hernandez. Hernandez is arrested and charged with the crime nine days later.
- June 30 - Hissène Habré is arrested in Senegal.
- July 3 - Mohammed Morsi is deposed as President of Egypt in a military coup lead by General Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
- July 13 - George Zimmerman is found not guilty in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin on the grounds that he was acting in self-defense.
- July 26 - Julius Malema founds the Economic Freedom Fighters.
- August - A majority of the Janjaweed in Sudan is formally brought under control of the Sudanese Armed Forces and reorganized into the Rapid Support Forces.
- August 1 - Ariel Castro is sentenced to three consecutive life terms in prison, plus 1,000 years, all without any possibility of parole. He would commit suicide in his prison cell a month into his sentence.

- December 12 - Kim Jong-un conducts a massive purge of the Workers' Party of Korea, culminating in the execution of his uncle and former advisor, Jang Song-thaek. The purge and execution are allegedly because of an attempted coup against Kim lead by Jang.
