January 30 - Karl Dönitz is appointed Supreme Commander of the German Navy, replacing Erich Raeder.
March 1 - The Nazi Party establishes the Belarusian Central Council to govern occupied Belarus.
March 20 - Mao Zedong is named Chairman of the Communist Party of China.
April 14 - SMERSH is founded.
May 30 - Josef Mengele is assigned to Auschwitz Birkenau concentration camp.
July 25 - Benito Mussolini is removed from power by the Grand Council of Fascism. The National Fascist Party is subsequently disbanded.
September 12 - Benito Mussolini is rescued from imprisonment by the Nazi Party.
September 23 - Benito Mussolini declares the formation of the Italian Social Republic, based in Salò, Northern Italy.
October 14 - Imperial Japan establishes the Second Philippine Republic in the Philippines.
November 3 to 4 - Operation Harvest Festival, the largest single day massacre of Jews in World War II, takes place when over 43,000 Jews are shot-gunned to death by the Schutzstaffel, the Ordnungspolizei and Ukrainian collaborators in Sonderdienst formations at Majdanek, Trawniki and Poniatowa concentration camps in occupied Poland.
