January 11 - 12-year old Shanda Sharer is kidnapped, tortured, and murdered by Melinda Loveless, Laurie Tackett, Hope Rippey, and Toni Lawrence in one of the worst crimes to occur in the history of the state of Indiana.
January 16 - End of the Salvadoran Civil War.
February 15 - Jeffrey Dahmer is sentenced to 15 consecutive life terms in prison, all with no chance of parole.
February 16 - Abbas al-Musawi, Secretary-general of Hezbollah, is assassinated. He is succeeded by Hassan Nasrallah.
March 17 - Hezbollah perpetrates a suicide bombing on the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina in retaliation for the assassination of Abbas al-Musawi, killing 29 people and injuring 242 others.
April 2 - Beginning of the Siege of Sarajevo.

October 30 to November 1 - The Halloween Massacre takes place in Luanda, Angola when government forces massacre thousands in an attempt to force UNITA out of the city.
November 20 - Emomali Rahmon is elected President of Tajikistan.
