  • July 27 - Eric Rudolph perpetrates the Centennial Olympic Park bombing in Atlanta, Georgia; 1 person is killed and over a hundred are injured.
  • September 13 - American rapper Tupac Shakur is assassinated by an unknown assailant in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas after attending a Mike Tyson boxing match with Suge Knight; the assailant's identity has never been discovered, but it was believed to have been Orlando Anderson, a member of the gang group Southside Crips.

  • September 27 - The Taliban take control of the Afghanistan government, renaming the country the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.

  • December 4 - Jonathan Schmitz is found guilty of the murder of Scott Amedure and is sentenced to 25-50 years in prison.
  • December 25 - 6-year old JonBenét Ramsey is murdered in her home in Boulder, Colorado by an unidentified invader. The crime currently remains unsolved, and is considered to be one of the most infamous unsolved crimes in American history.
