  • March 13 - Thomas Watt Hamilton kills sixteen children and a teacher at Dunblane Primary School before shooting himself.
  • March 29 - Allan Ford, Justin Fowler and Jeffrey Pernell are sentenced to life in prison for kidnapping, raping and murdering Louise Jensen in Cyprus.
  • April 3 - Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber, is captured by the FBI.
  • April 28 to 29 - Martin Bryant goes on a shooting spree throughout Port Arthur, Tasmania, killing 35 people in the deadliest mass shooting in Australian history.
  • June 18 - Benjamin Netanyahu is elected Prime Minister of Israel for the first time.
  • July 19 - Radovan Karadžić resigns as President of Republika Srpska and goes on the run after being indicted by the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) for war crimes and crimes against humanity. He is succeeded by Biljana Plavšić.
  • July 27 - Eric Rudolph perpetrates the Centennial Olympic Park bombing in Atlanta, Georgia; 1 person is killed and over a hundred are injured.
  • September 13 - American rapper Tupac Shakur is assassinated by an unknown assailant in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas after attending a Mike Tyson boxing match with Suge Knight; the assailant's identity has never been discovered, but it was believed to have been Orlando Anderson, a member of the gang group Southside Crips.
  • August 31 - End of the First Chechen War.
  • September 27 - The Taliban take control of the Afghanistan government, renaming the country the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.
  • October 24 - Beginning of the First Congo War.
  • October 26 - The final murder by El Psicópata where he kills a couple, after that he disappears.
  • November 6 - Democratic elections are restored in the Gambia. Yahya Jammeh dissolves the Armed Forces Provisional Ruling Council upon being formally elected president.
  • November 11 - The white supremacist website Stormfront is launched by former Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard Don Black.
  • December - The Japanese Society for History Textbook Reform is founded.
  • December 4 - Jonathan Schmitz is found guilty of the murder of Scott Amedure and is sentenced to 25-50 years in prison.
  • December 25 - 6-year old JonBenét Ramsey is murdered in her home in Boulder, Colorado by an unidentified invader. The crime currently remains unsolved, and is considered to be one of the most infamous unsolved crimes in American history.
  • December 29 - End of the Guatemalan Civil War.
