  • March 24 - The Jonesboro massacre occurs when Mitchell Johnson and Andrew Golden, both students at Westside Middle School in Jonesboro Arkansas, kill five people and injure 10 others.

  • June 7 - African-American man James Byrd, Jr. is abducted by white supremacists John William King, Lawrence Russell Brewer, and Shawn Allen Berry in Jasper, Texas. The three men torture Byrd before chaining him to the back of their pickup truck and dragging him three miles, during which Byrd remained alive until his head and arm were severed when his body struck a culvert.
  • June 22 - The Khmer Rouge's Provisional Government of National Union and National Salvation of Cambodia (PGNUNSC) collapses.
  • June 30 - Joseph Estrada is elected as President of the Philippines
  • May 28 - Brynn Hartman kills her husband, actor and comedian Phil Hartman, at their home in Los Angeles, California, before committing suicide.
  • July 6 - Viktor Orbán is elected Prime Minister of Hungary for the first time.

  • August 7 – 1998 US Embassy bombings: the bombings of the United States embassies in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and Nairobi, Kenya, kill 224 people and injure over 4,500; they are linked to Al-Qaeda.
  • August 15 - Omagh bombing: The Real IRA detonates a car bomb originally intended for a courthouse in front of a store in Omagh, Northern Ireland, killing 29 (including two Spanish tourists) and injuring at least 220.

  • October 12 - Gay college student Matthew Shepard is kidnapped, tortured, and brutally murdered in Laramie, Colorado by Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson, in what is considered to be the first homophobic hate crime to gain national attention.
  • October 16 - Augusto Pinochet is arrested in London after being indicted by a Spanish court for human rights violations committed during his rule of Chile.
