- January 27 - Sean Kelly is jailed for his involvement in the Shankill Road bombing.
- March 9 - 32-year old Scott Amedure is murdered in his home in Lake Orion, Michigan by his neighbor Jonathan Schmitz, three days after Amedure confessed he had a crush on Schmitz during an appearance on The Jenny Jones Show.
- March 20 - Tokyo subway sarin attack occurs when Shoko Asahara and the cult Aum Shinrikyo detonate sarin which is kill 12 people, 1,050 people are injured
- March 31 - Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla-Perez is murdered by Yolanda Saldívar, the head of her fan club.
- April 19 - The Oklahoma City Bombing occurs when Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols detonate a Ryder truck filled with homemade explosives at the base of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, killing 168 people and injuring more than 680 others.
- April 22 - The Kibeho Massacre occurs at a camp for internally displaced persons near Kibeho in southwest Rwanda when RPF soldiers open fire. Australian soldiers serving as part of UNAMIR estimated at least 4,000 people were killed, while the Rwandan government has claimed that the death toll is 338.
- July 11 to 22 - The Srebrenica Massacre occurs; Bosnian Serb forces under command of General Ratko Mladić massacre more than 8,000 Bosniaks, mainly men and boys, in and around the town of Srebrenica during the Bosnian War. The massacre is considered an act of genocide.
- July 13 - Chuan Leekpai's first term as Prime Minister of Thailand comes to an end.
- August 23 - Meles Zanawi steps down as interim President of Ethiopia after democratic elections are restored. He is subsequently named prime minister.
- September 29 - American Atheists founder Madalyn Murray O'Hair, her son Garth, and granddaughter Robin, are kidnapped and murdered by former American Atheists employee David Waters.
- October 3 - O.J. Simpson is acquitted for the murders of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman, for which he was indicted for the previous year.
- October 30 - Yolanda Saldívar is found guilty for the first-degree murder of Selena Quintanilla-Perez.
- November 4 - Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin is assassinated in Tel Aviv by right-wing extremist Yigal Amir.
- November 12 - End of the Croatian War of Independence.
- November 19 - Egyptian Islamic Jihad perpetrates a car bombing on the Egyptian embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan, killing 17 people and injuring 60.
- December 14 - The Bosnian War ends following the signing of the Dayton Agreement.
